On the Dutch part of this website we provide information
about importing cars into The Netherlands, maintenance issues etc. etc.
Since most of this information is not valid for our international
visitors, please find below a small summary of things that might concern
you if you travel through our country.
General information
- U.K. visitors beware: we drive on the right side of the
road (i.e. the left side!).
- Traffic can be extremely dense during the rush hours and
the many traffic jams can easily result in overheated cars. Check
your fan belts and the functionality of your radiator if it is likely
you will
have to travel through the coastal area (the most busiest part of
our country) during the rush hours.
- Most people speak English and many of them speak German
as well. It might be a bit more difficult for our French visitors
to find somebody who speaks their language fluently.
- Some cities are known by two different names e.g. 's-Gravenhage
and Den Haag are both The Hague. Official signs will say "Den Haag",
the same applies for 's-Hertogenbosch and Den Bosch. These are major
cities that are often used as reference point when travelling, so
be aware.
- Leaded fuel is no longer being sold in The Netherlands.
- We have very few toll-roads and toll-bridges. To
the best of our knowledge you will not be able to pay with creditcard
so make
sure you have cash money with you.
- In the bigger cities parking can be very difficult. In most
cases you will have to pay with either coins or electronically. The
electronic method is known as "chip-knip" and this will not function
with foreign
credit- or bankcards. Usually coin and chip-knip parkingticket vending
machines are positioned alternating.
